To be fair, he might not've had more than $500. Most wagies I've known figure out how much they make in a month and then figure out how to spend as much of that as possible. Multiple car payments, eating out all the time, sure honey we can get two new iphones we have money for that every month, etc etc.
Come time for an unexpected expense or when they try to cash purchase something to downsize to, and they're really stuck. Almost all of their checks go straight to the multiple payments they have to make every month for all the crap they bought.
Most of society is caught in the trap of monthly payments that last longer than the goods do.
