Because of the cost of the tube and installation, the air from the tubes was directed down to only cool the sows noses, not cool the entire building. Trying to move 500 cfm per sow during the summer would be cost prohibitive. Part of the issue is that you have to move the air slow enough to heat up or cool down. Here is a pdf from University of Michigan I found about earth tubes from 1985.
