Subject: RE: Calculating Gallons Per Acre On A Sprayer When Spraying Question

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
There are several values that need to be entered into the Raven for it to be programmed. They include the widths of the various booms, a ground speed calibration number, a flow meter calibration number and the target rate(s) desired. A Raven 440/450 will flash the display if it does not have all these numbers.

You must be moving or using a simulated speed for the system to calculate the applied rate as this is absolutely part of the mathematics involved. If you suddenly doubled your speed, the amount you were putting on per acre would be cut in half.

Read the following steps carefully and follow them. This is a basic troubleshooting technique that splits the problem in half allowing you to pursue the half causing the problem.

If your rate is shown is zero while moving and actually spraying there is a problem. Push the VOL/min key. This shows how many gallons are passing through the sprayer in a minute. This should show a value even if you are not moving. Next push the Area/hr button. This shows how much land you would cover in an hour with the current width and ground speed. One or the other of these will show zero. These values are used to calculate the Gallons/acre.

If the Vol/min is zero, then the problem might be a zero flow meter calibration value, a bad flow meter or the wiring between the flow meter and the 450.

If the Area/hr is zero then the problem might be with improper values for the boom widths, the speed cal number or the speed input device itself. If the Area/hr is zero then push the Speed key if it shows a reasonable speed then the problem is the width values or internal damage that is not conveying the status of the boom sections (known as boom sense).

Using this technique will allow you to concentrate on the source of the problem.

As others have mentioned it is important to be using appropriate tips with the sprayer for the product, rate and ground speed being used. The steps I list above are for troubleshooting your Raven.
