Itta Bena Mississippi | Here’s my opinion as a farmer, harvester and ginner.
In mid south conditions, anything less sturdy than what we have been using is risky. Here, we have to get them out of the field before the weather sets in. That usually involves moving them at least twice.
Where long moves are necessary, that virtually rules out a spear or piercing forks, as the wrap is what maintains bale integrity when speared. Less glue or lesser grade plastic will lead to more busted bales. The cost of picking the up, what ever method used, will offset purchase savings. Not to mention time wasted. Whether it happens in the field, on the turnrow, or at the gin.
I’m all for cutting costs, but don’t believe that storing what the farmer has spent money and time to produce in marginal wrap is the answer. I will not use on my farm or any job we go out on. Different circumstances/conditions may allow it but I don’t see it here.
