Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | I did something similar with a Deere 4720 and Ag Leader electronics. It was necessary to use the Brown Box to run the sprayer and work with Rate Control. I used the Ag Leader with a couple of Ag Leader modules to work with swath control and mapping.
Here's an abbreviated description of how this was done. The original section switches were rewired a bit so they became inputs to the Ag Leader system rather than directly opening/closing the section valves. The output from the Ag Leader Liquid Product Control module went to where the switches had been wired. This meant that the Ag Leader was in the middle of things as far as section control and could turn sections ON/OFF for me. The Ag Leader module needed to have flow information since it is designed to do it all. For this purpose a tee was inserted in between the flow meter and the original Deere wiring. This means that the Deere Brown Box got the flow information as before but the Ag Leader module received it also. The control portion out of the Ag Leader was not connected.
In normal operation, the Brown box controlled the rate as before. If the Ag Leader decided a section should be OFF since it had already been sprayed, it would do so. The Brown box would adjusts the flow based on which sections were on. It was the same as if the operator flipped off a section switch except that the Ag Leader did it for me.
I did need to enter the desired target rate in both the Brown box and the Ag Leader system. If I changed ground speed, the Brown box would adjust the rate as before. The Ag Leader would attempt to adjust the flow also but its control circuit was not connected. If the applied rate got way out of tolerance both the Brown box and the Ag Leader display would sound their alarms.
This might seem complicated but worked well. In your case with the Trimble components I would think that the basic idea would be the same. Maybe Field IQ could be setup as swath control only but even if it expects to control the rate, it only needs to receive flow information with a tee flow meter cable such as I used.
