A VFD is a great way to control speed without producing resistive heat. It switches off the power during part of the power cycle which reduces the torque of a motor. Unfortunately the motor also loses power accordingly. That's why it's usually a better idea to use other methods like a variable transmission or a motor with variable windings.

On doing some reading it appears that a VFD controlled 3 phase motor produces a flat consistent torque output over the entire range of speed. What changes is horsepower, as it is proportional to speed.
