Here they come from the mainline UP tracks 100+ trains a day. By the time they are done they are not much more than a bundle of splinters. To sort thru and find one worth planting takes way too much time. We are in a dry climate and they won't last 10 to 15 yrs here and be rotted off especially if used in a lot fence. As a corner post in pasture we might get 20yrs from some. They are a sponge after a few million axles run over them. 100 unit train x4axles per car x100 trains per day=40,000 axles per dayx365=ALOT of axles as in 14,600,000 axles per year and they typically last 3 to 4 years before replaced. They usually replace everyother or every third sleeper when replacing them.
