Subject: RE: Hauling your own liquid manure

Southeast PA
Tractor trailer tanks (6500 per load) 6 mile round trip is about 2 to 2.5 loads/hr. This is field spread or transfer, it works out about the same. 500 hp with a lot of hills and stop signs/turns to deal with. Averaged about 12 mi/hr and 6 gal/hr fuel. Ag tractor and tank can't come close to hauling those numbers with hills and distance. Truck will be doing 30 up the hill while tractor is doing 9.

I've spread some nasty hills with a truck, one needs to know what they're doing when spreading, plan out how to spread so as not to paint yourself into a corner. Ag tractor is nicer to spread dumb shaped fields/really hilly stuff, but for any amount of road running I would take a truck everyday of the week, the speed and road ride can't be beat.

Manure consistency will dictate how much you can put down in one pass. Thick steer or dairy can do alot. Thin separated manure, 9k is doable on flat ground, 6 can be hard on hills. One thing that helps is if you can overlap....put one load on at 5k then come back and next load overlap half of the first pass with another 5k. That gives it time to soak in some. Issue with trucks is you don't want to be in too low of a gear, or you can spin out. 3rd is a nice gear (10 speed) to spread in. 2nd gave us about 6k and 3rd about 4500/ac. 3rd gets around much nicer since you have more speed/less torque to spin out.
