SW MN | CANBUS is a communication pipeline. It's the network that allows all the controllers on your equipment to communicate with each other. In order for controllers to communicate over CAN, they need to speak the same language, or protocol. All the controllers in your tractor likely have a proprietary protocol. Your 2600 display connects to the CANBUS in your tractor, and that's how it interacts with the tractor.
Lots of implements have controllers on them now too, so they often have their own CANBUS. It's advantageous for the implement and tractor CAN networks to connect so they can control each other or share information. Here's where ISOBUS and virtual terminals come in. ISOBUS is a CAN protocol, or language. It was developed to be somewhat universal across farm equipment manufacturers, so a Case planter can communicate with a Deere tractor, for example. A virtual terminal is a user interface where you can interact with the system, like your 2600 display. Your 2600 is actually an ISOBUS virtual terminal, so it knows the ISOBUS protocol. So the 2600 can communicate with any controller/implement that is ISOBUS compatible. There's also a universal ISOBUS plug on the back of most tractors now to make the physical connection between the tractor and implement CAN networks.
An example of this: a John Deere planter with a Seedstar 2 monitor gets hooked up to a Fendt tractor. The Fendt display is an ISOBUS virtual terminal. The planter ISOBUS harness plugs into the tractor ISOBUS connector. And then Seedstar shows up on the Fendt display just like it would on a 2600 in a Deere tractor. If ISOBUS didn't exist, you'd have to mount a Deere display in the Fendt and connect it directly to the planter, or the planter wouldn't function.
Another advantage is reducing the number of monitors in the cab. I can have one ISOBUS display that will run everything - autosteer, population monitor, row shutoffs, rate controller for liquid fertilizer, etc, and all that stuff can be from different manufacturers (in theory, anyway). | |
