Don't hate me, but I have zero covers out this year. With low crop prices in July and too many unknowns i decided to save that money. I figure I will still have the benefits from prior years of intensive covers to carry me. And I will see if I can learn anything from taking a bye year. I'll be back into it next fall though.
I am still using Outlook, but am looking to switch things up a bit. That's why I marked this thread.

Its going to be a cold winter because H#!! just froze over! No covers, im suprised but completely understand. I did think any of my arg was going to make it because of the draught but a late frost saved it so far.
TWH is just showing up in my county, next year i suspect will be the first big year for it locally. Given no twh, i have been keeping the group 15 out of the post application. I plant beans into a heavy cereal rye cover (90lbs/ac) and would like believe that will help in my control of pigweeds.
Still i have a zero tolerance and when they show up in my fields, the residuals will be coming out despite my desire to have covers. It just might turn into cereal rye into standing corn and no covers into the beans. Honestly i haven't talked to anyone lately locally that likes any covers in front of corn (everyone likes cereal rye in front of beans though).
Still i like what arg does on my heavier hoytville clay loams, just have to see if i can keep using it. To establish arg it basically means no zidua and highly risky if metolachor.
Back the original subject, right now im in full coup mode and im not spending the money for outlook when generic dual is $xyz cheaper! Then i think about the rains shutting off and it doesn't matter the $xyz dollars i saved when i didn't get enough rain to activate it (and wasted all the money on dual). |
