Subject: Re: CRP Ground, plow or chisel

Enid,OK
We broke out CRP in 2007. Burned the old stand in April, waited for new green growth in the spring and sprayed with 32 oz of 6# RU. Followed with a second spray in June with 48 oz 6#RU to kill the rest of the Switchgrass and Bluestem portion of the CRP blend. Our plan was to no-till RR soybeans and we still could not kill the Swtchgrass and the field got too wet and we missed our planting window. We used a tandem disk to take out the monster Switchgrass and prepared a seedbed for winter wheat. The base of the Switchgrass plants were a problem at planting time causing the drill to plug up from time to time. The wheat looked like crap all winter long. The silver lining to the cloud was we were able to sell the wheat crop as a seed production field, capture a premium for seed, sold at the market high and due to late planting date we escaped late freeze damage and this was our best yielding field for 2009. The clumps of swithgrass are still in the field and appear that the will be a problem for planting of wheat in the fall of 2009. Looking back I would save the $$ on the second spray of RU and applied P205 and moldboard plow the field to deal with the monster swithchgrass.
