| Hi Kirshenman, unless I misinterpreted the research paper - the N was placed in the mid-rows (see below), but there was a small amount of seed placed K (10Kg/ha = +/- 10lb/ac). Your obserations with regards to fertilizer injury in general are correct though, the wider the row spacing the greater the risk - especially on dry, coarse textured soils.
A mixture of 22 kg P2O5 ha–1, 10 kg K2O ha–1, and
15 kg S ha–1 fertilizer was applied with the seed at planting and
liquid N fertilizer was applied to a total rate of 101 kg N ha–1
for all three N treatments. The liquid fertilizer was dripped
between wheat rows using a modified herbicide sprayer with
special calibrated openers with attached drop tubes.
The experiment was a randomized complete block design
with split-split-plot arrangements and four replications. Row
spacing was assigned to main-plots, N treatment was assigned
to split-plots, and seeding rate was assigned to split-split-plots.
Plot dimensions were 1.2 m by 9.1 m. A 1.2-m wide plot drill
with disk-type openers was used for seeding.
