Applying N in any form before planting is no way considered side-dressing. That is applying pre-plant. Period. N-serve, esn, or not, still pre-plant. And that is not when the corn needs N. True side-dress means applying in growing crop, much closer to when N is needed.
And in my opinion, side-dress N should be applied in the soil, not on top.
