Subject: Thoughts on 2230 John Deere Field Cultivator

South Central Illinois
Looking for some opinions and thoughts on current situation or some other first hand experience.

We switched last year from a 46’ 2210 with accu-depth with a 5 bar coil tine pulling a 47’ Unverferth 1225 double rolling basket. Was a good setup and worked well. Basket was somewhat of a pain but was still able to get around.

Fast forward to spring of 2020 and we went to a 52’ 2230 with 5 bar coil tine and rear hitch pulling a 53’ J&M TF2S5 basket. Instantly had problems, the rolling basket constantly bounced the field cultivator up and down. This was due to the 2230s having a different hitch design that stuck out further past the machine therefor creating more leverage for the baskets tongue weight. At the time we were also using the hydraulically foldable tongue which was a blessing for road travel. However, the basket also came with a dolly wheel type tongue (we now know what for) to be swapped for the original. Instantly our tongue weight problem went away but it is now such a road train it is impossible to get access to some of our fields.

At this point, I’m not sure if we should try and trade field cultivators to one with just the 3 bar tine and hydraulic single basket (we have some heavy gumbos that haven’t broke down in the past with a single roller)

Change the 2230 rear hitch to make it sturdier and somehow spread out the tongue weight and allow us to go back to the hydraulic tongue. Or, switch to a different basket brand with hopefully different weight layouts.

Has anyone had or encountered these problems? When the field cultivator starts to bounce it messes with the Tru-Set something crazy and makes the rear of the 2230 dig like a chisel plow. It’s an aggravating situation for a $140k tillage combo.

Thanks
