NW IL | Doing the feed rations he puts a certain number of pounds in the mixer wagon (has a scale on it).
So when mixing up feed it is based on how many pounds go in the mixer, not volume.
So 100bu of oats weights less than 60bu of wheat which then affects how many acres of cropland is needed to satisfy the feed requirements of our animals, vs how many acres of crops are left over to sell. For us it often comes down to maximizing feed produced per acre. High test weight is definitely part of that.
(With the organic dairy grazing rules we have to calculate amount of pounds of dry matter fed (which is then compared to expected cow intake based on animal weight). So water weight is factored into everything too.) | |
