My 1991 9400 does that, too, occasionally. I had a Deere tech look at it but of course it wouldn't do while he was there. He suggested that it could be the bearing on the other end of the shaft, behind the big variable pulley on the left side. He tried to use a bar and "wiggle" the bearing, and it was tight, He told me to grease that bearing good, and keep it greased. I grease it every day, and it quit making the noise.
That was a couple years ago, and I assume that I will be changing the bearing eventually, but, like you, I want to find out for sure what's bad before i go ripping things apart.
