Is it just me or does it seem that the most dangerous area now on grain farms is the bin site. From ladder rungs breaking, buried in grain, PTO wrapping dangers and guys getting crushed by swing away augers etc. How do you guys feel? I think in the old days tractor roll overs with no ROPS seemed to be prevalent but not so much now.

There's plenty of accidents that can happen there. Worked at a grain elevator during college plenty of opportunities to die there

I'd say that's fairly accurate. Most accidents I hear of are involving bins or grain equipment.

On our farm it's wherever my Dad is that accidents are likely to happen, luckily, we don't have bins.

Moving equipment on the road for us.

Had an impatient oil pickup take his mirror off on the hay hiker rail. Just kept on driving so I guess he didn't need it...probably didn't help he was going about 80 either.

I would say the most deadly is the one you cannot taste, smell, or even aware of and that’s carbon dioxide from manure gasses

It does seem like you don't hear about as many roll over accidents as you once did. Besides ROPS protected cabs, tractor and combines are wider and pull wider implements (or in the case of combines heads) so you don't have to get so close to the back side of terraces. Many times when operating my son's 9600 on hillsides I think about how glad I am that I'm not doing it with my old 4400 or worse yet my dad's IH 151.

Livestock still might be most dangerous.

Bin sites we tend to get in a hurry and long hours and it can be more complex than we realize. So I agree they are way up the list.

I would recommend not falling backwards on the vertical pipe sticking up on this hitch.

1. Animals - unpredictable, weight advantage, working with them in confined spaces.
2. Combines - lots of moving parts that can become clogged, heads that can drop suddenly, poor visibility to sides and rear.

From a quick Web search: Number one = overturning machinery, with tractors the most common.

After that, it depends on whether you mean deaths or just injuries. But animal injuries, falls, grain entrapment/suffocation, machinery entanglements, and toxic chemical exposure all figure prominently.

You could park a semi truck behind a feed mixer and not see it behind you. We try to avoid ever backing up but plan to have a backup camera.

Chebanse, IL.....

I think that nation-wide, tractor or machine rollovers are still king at causing great harm or death. Probably animal caused injuries is next. Then grain bins.

Everyone worries about NH3, but that's probably not even in the top 100.

I agree about bin site. On a lot of farms it seems thats where a lot of farmers spend the most time on the ground anymore.
Maybe not "Most dangerous" but I have herd quite a few stories around here of Hy-Lift jacks whipping people. A few got pretty good beatings and three have been sent to the hospital I know.

often wonder why those jacks are still sold, with lawyers on every tv channel wanting to sue a company!
