NWMO | Have run both brands.
MacDon built simple and adapts to all brands, with fewer moving parts. 3 hinged ridged sections and as you go up in size the wing section get larger so it does not stay uniform widths on the 3 sections. I think that is a down fall in soybeans as you go wider with longer wings. Reel to sickle clearance is way better no matter head width. Also can adjust guard angle from cab on any machine.
Deere FD Is heavy built with lost of parts and complex pieces. Flex is better than there auger head hands down. Sickle is easier to make repairs quickly. Reel to cutter bar height is all over the place as it cannot run as tight due to cutter bar flex movement. Cab to cutter bar visibility is way better. Need to have a new enough machine with hyd feeder face plate to get any guard angle adjustment from cab.
After running both like the fit and finish/in cab creature comforts of the Deere. but have to give it time to react to major ground changes. Like the guard angle adjustment and simplicity of the MacDon and it reacts faster to changing ground conditions as you are not waiting on the hydraulics because it's mechanical.
Both are great heads and preform better than the other in different ground conditions. I personally think it is which is best for the majority of your cutting conditions.
Needed to change head sizes this year for row spacing reasons and am shoving a Deere around this season.
Biggest difference noticed so far is the Deere is putting way less dirt in the tank and trough the machine. So I will assume that is way less wear on Combine, Cart, and Auger loading bins.
My opinions are Soybean cutting only. | |
