Wild guess but your topsoil is beyond fertile. Your immediate subsoil is clay that holds water. Your subsoil in this spot is sand that allows the excess water to drain away, like a free tile system. So you have the perfect setup in this little spot.


To be clear, there is no sand surrounding this hill. Just topsoil and clay. The only place there is sand is in the hill. As mentioned above, glaciers do funny things.

Below is a picture of the area. The 267 picture is about 1/2 way to the road. Which is completely flat ground. It's an old picture, but the trees and alfalfa are gone. Inside the lines is what we harvested. (Approximately)
