Dealer ordered the sensor but it was the wrong one. So the correct one had to be bought as the whole pedal assembly. Part number is F6TZ 9F836AS from Ford. My pickup is the old body style. Vin #
1FTHF26F4VEC42437. Can anyone tell which one it would call for.

I pulled up rockauto for a 1996 powerstroke truck(to avoid the 1997 change-over year fiasco), and it returns very reasonable results for F6TZ9F836AA. Look in the "Interior" tab, then select "Accelerator Pedal Sensor."

I tried googling your "...AS" number, and there's no hits at all. I suspect somebody at the dealership miswrote the number.

I did a little more searching, and it appears that all the 7.3 powerstrokes used the same sensor. The pedal itself appears to have changed with the new body style, but the sensor is showing the same part number across the whole range.

Another interesting test is to try putting the truck in cruise control while it's acting up. If cruise control works fine, it basically has to be the pedal sensor.

Thanks. When I entered the dealers part number in rock auto I thought it showed a pedal assembly but said out of stock. Will check again.
Dealer got in a sensor but said it was wrong one, thus needed the whole pedal assembly. So that makes me wonder if they are the same or not. Will keep checking.
I will try the cruise control check. Thanks for that suggestion.
