Shortage of decent hay. What hay was made was put up good, but most guys were looking at 20-40% less on the first few cuttings. I didn't even take a third cutting of alfalfa as there wasn't enough to make it worth the time/fuel. Opening up CRP acres added tons, but of poorer quality.
Will be bagging silage for a guy this week who said his entire 2020 hay crop will be fed up before the end of September.....when he usually doesn't even begin feeding until November.
Crazy how hay's still so cheap in the areas that got rain as it seems like not "that" far away in IA big chunks of ground are short on hay. I keep shaking my head at hay prices but tons of grass hay locally in 5x6's for $20, $30 etc. I can't imagine they're making anything on it with the nutrients they're giving away but those kind of guys don't really realize hay really saps soil nutrients if you don't put it back |
