Does bushels come into the equation when doing tonnage that way?
Generally speaking, no. The ear accounts for about 50% of the weight of a corn plant when harvesting at silage moistures. So even when the bushels per acre increases, the density of the silage remains fairly constant. This is less true though on the extreme ends of yield. When comparing 200 bu corn to 50 bu corn, yes there is gonna be a little less feed per foot with the 50 because at that point the ear probably only makes up 30% (guess) of the weight, so the feed is less dense. Our corn typically ranges from 100 to 150, and I don’t notice a difference in the bag. I’ve never grown 200 bushel corn in my life so I don’t know if that would be noticeable or not. Moisture, on the other hand, makes a big difference in how tight you can pack the bag, thus how much material is in each foot.
