Subject: Best Corn head for CIH 7088

We are having head loss issues with our 7088 hillco combine and a 2005 geringhoff 830 rotadisc corn head, butt shelling and throwing cobs. Corn variety or brand does not matter or seem to make a difference. Originally we had a JD9550 sidehill combine on the geringhoff corn head and had no issues with header loss because the 9550 had a hydraulic variable rate feeder house so we were able to slow the header down. The 7088 combine does not have that option. On the geringhoff head we have put the 32 tooth gears in to slow it down, it helped but our head loss is still unacceptable. The face plate of the feeder house is tilted all the way back, so the corn head is sitting at the proper angle. Our deck plates are properly set. We have tried adjusting our ground speed faster and slower to give the cobs more of a "cushion", but not having any better results. We have a John Deere 9500 sidehill and 893 corn head that we also run and have no issues with head shelling. In our soybean fields you can tell to the row where the john deere head was (no volunteer corn) and where the geringhoff head was (lots of volunteer corn).

We were not planning on getting a different corn head for some time because the geringhoff was rebuilt when we bought it. With the head loss we would like to find a different corn head that will be a better match for the speed of the combine feeder house. Being that we have a Hillco-hillside leveler (27 degree) we don't have the ability to try out different corn heads because our drive shafts sit so far back on our feeder house and the normal drive shafts are either at too much of an angle or too short. We have to make modifications to a head and drive shafts to make it work on the 7088 with the 27 degree leveler.

Wondering what corn head is a good match for a 7088 combine?

Our CIH and Geringhoff dealer told us that the rotadisc tries to do everything in the first section of the row unit not allowing the stalk to work its way back into the row unit like a non-chopping head. They told us a Northstar is the better option. There are not many Northstars available for a reasonable price that are not wore out and are not a 2012 or 2013 models (we were told to stay away from those 2 years of production).

I have found a low acre (only 4000 acres) 2003 CIH 2208 that has the 2408 hook up. I have heard many mixed reviews about the 2208 heads and have been told not to buy a 3xxx series CIH head. I am looking at the 2208 over a 4408 because the stalk rollers speed is slower and the header cost is less. Also we want our next corn head to be non chopping.

Or being that we were originally John Deere do we go to a John Deere 9770, 9670, 9760 or 9660(No emmissions)?? and keep the geringhoff?

TIA.
