I think you would be better served by getting a chopping corn head. Saves an extra trip and in my opinion you get a better job.


From what I have seen, this is true. A flail shredder works great to chew up cornstalks, but the way a chopping corn head or a knife roll corn head cuts the stalk leads to more rapid decomposition.

As far as good stalk choppers, there are a number of good machines to chose from. Look for good heavy shafts and bearings. I prefer a big J knife over cup knives and I don’t like knives mounted on D rings. Also look for a PTO that has a CV joint on the tractor end and an over running clutch on the shredder end.
