Subject: RE: starter fert for fall wheat

Wardsville, Ontario, Canada
I don't put any fertilizer with my wheat in the fall. Just plant the seed I kept from that summer, cleaned and treated, usually no-tilled after soyas. I throw on some potash and nitrate in late April and seem to do OK. Averaged 82 bushels/acre this year and some of that was on higher sand. My neighbours fertilize the daylights out of their crops. Nice crops, and their wheat yeilded in the high 80's and low 90's, but was their profit eaten up in the fert. costs? Keep in mind that this works for me, but it might not be comfortable for you!!! Try some with fertilizer, and some without. We tried that with soyas for quite a few years. Now we only put fertilizer with the 2nd soya bean crop in a row. Again, works for me.
