Concordia, KS | I think he’s asking to get a feel of what a D3 or D4 drought looks like in Iowa. A few years back I was in Ames about this time. It was classified as a D3 drought at the time. We were in a D1 classification at home, and the Iowa corn looked better than ours did.
I know it’s relative to location, but we see it every year on here. The claim is that roadsides and pastures are brown, haven’t mowed the yard for 3 weeks, need an insurance adjuster, small crop, etc, and then when harvest gets here, it’s “better than expected.”
Ironically, farmers as a whole are pretty decent one uppers at either end of the scale. If you are dry, somebody is drier. If one guy gets an inch of rain, the other got 1.15. It’s really pretty comical, and I mean that in general, not pointing to one state or the other. | |
