E.Central MN | Yes, a young guy near here bought an FMC one row sweet corn picker about 15 years ago. A couple years later I saw one at a big consignment auction so I mentioned it to his dad. He said it was the one his son had bought. The son said it would work if all the corn ripened at the same time. But because some corn ripens early and some ripens late, he ended up having to pay a sorting crew or his customers wouldn't buy it for the price he charged. It all had to be good. With a regular picking crew he could do an early harvest pass, then come back in a few days when the majority was ready, and could even come back for a third pass and get the ones that ripened late if there was enough of it to justify the expense. He said the cost to raise the crop was too high to throw a big chunk of it away at harvest. | |
