I usually order half cracked and half shelled, along with ground corn cobs added, plus the protein pellets. Seems to work well. And the Bovatec the one guy mentioned is an ionophore, like rumensin, to promote growth and help prevent bloat. I always keep a bloat block and a TM salt block in front of them, too. I can't be there all the time watching them, so I figure if a $15 bloat block helps even a little, it's money well spent. I'm only feeding a few, 12 or so, for freezer beef, though, so large feedlots probably wouldn't use bloat blocks.
