We ear tag at birth on all the calves to match the mother cow with the date and cow #. We tag the cows when they go through the chute, with ear tags that can be seen in the field, also Nasco has a numbered metal tag much like the bangs tag that we put in all the mother cows, if the ear tag get lost we have a record of the cow number and can install a new tag when she is in the chute.
Has worked for us.
