Western Nebraska | Every calf gets a four digit tag and a matching tattoo at birth. That number remains the same throughout their life, so as long as we do a good job tattooing the calf they are permanently marked for the rest of their life. I have been toying with the idea of freeze branding ID but with red cows I am not sure that it would be as effective as on black cows. The tattoo is a pain to read sometimes but it is better than the alternative of not having any idea who the animal is when they inevitably lose their tag. We had been using Z-tags and after we got tired of the faded and peeled tags we finally went to Ritchey. We have been real happy with them and haven't lost much at all in the last two or three years.
