Double Cut red clover is the choice around here. Cheap and grows well. If you want something less agressive that will not get as tall in your wheat try single cut clover. I would not plant till about a month/ six weeks till your growing season really starts. For me in Ontario where we usually start to plant end of April first of May I would spread in March. Just broadcast 6-10 lbs on in spring. Can blend with dry fert, but better going through air flow, spinners won't throw seed as far as fert. In Ontario a good stand of clover is suposed to count for 70 lbs of actual N for a corn crop.
