| I've been feeding whole corn for several years now and too have wondered if the cattle are getting the goods out of the kernals. So this spring I put the latex gloves on and went out pie hunting. Picked up enough kernal to get a cup sample, washed them up ( not perfectly clean) and then got a sample out the the bin of dry corn. Sent both samples in, I was shocked at the results. Unfortunately the biggest difference in the two samples was moisture 41 vs. 15. Protein dropped only slightly in the digested kernals and net energy for gain was the same in both samples. It would be interesting to do the same with rolled corn and compare the differences. What is the most a person should expect the rumen to extract from the kernal? I'd think there's always going to be some protein and energy left, in the old days hogs were typically ran in the feedlot to clean up the corn in the manure, how well the hogs gained I don't know. Just some of my observations. | |
