Subject: Starting a Dairy

SW Idaho
There is a 150 cow dairy for lease and I have a friend who has been a dairyman all his life and he is trying to encourage me to get into the business. I know I can learn the business and being a row cropper and pork producer all my life I know I could do it and grow most all my feed. Things are tight and there is very little room to grow by picking up more farm ground so a dairy would be one way to expand. I'm thinking it would take 400k to get started. I also know that the industry has been in a slump but the price has improved a few dollars, and with feed headed down $12 milk is starting to make money. Now is the time to get in as far as buying cows is concerned.

What's the opinion of those around the dairy industry? Where does the industry look like it's headed, heard $25 milk is possible but we all know not wanted.
