Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot | Some areas in CA are dried up, completely. Other areas got limited supplies and shifted water to orchards and other high dollar permenant crops. Other areas have full supplies. Depends on the district your in and where/how they source the water. Many of the eastside private districts (Turlock, Modesto Irrigation Districts) had good supplies, as did class one federal water from Friant (San Joaquin water). But westside users who use federal water out of the Delta, or worse yet State water contractors, got pretty meager supplies.
Regardless, a lot of hay got dried up in areas in the San Joaquin Valley. It still doesn't matter much when the dairy market has no money to buy large stocks of hay. All of the brokers I deal with are on an as-needed basis (as in one or two days worth of feed at a time) with the dairies they supply. That is scary to me, considering most of these outfits have several thousand cows to feed everyday.
The supreme hay market has come back some, mostly I feel due to real limited supplies as you mentioned. Lots and lots of feeder hay, everywhere.
The cowboys in NV have lots of hay to chose from, they must be getting one heck of deal to be sourcing hay out of CA. Heck, I know hay growers in NV trying to sell off quality hay to cowboys here in Oregon... | |
