Mankato MN; Casa Grande AZ | I haven't shown pigs for a couple of years.
Imagine my surprise when I saw those short legged barrows that the young judges liked.
Some observers were calling them "pugs".
While they are loaded with muscle, they just don't seem practical to me.
One barrow went into convultions during the show, and had to be sent back to the barn.
Being that short, I can imagine the breeding difficulties that would occur with a natural service. The boar would straddle a short gilt, or a short boar couldn't reach a sow to get hooked up.
The purbred breeding gilts looked short too.
Who started this trend? My guess is the barrow jockeys from OK and TX. |
