Grand Rapids, MI | In MI a good population is between 1.8 and 2.5 million seeds/ac. We would push up the pop as it got later in the season. Winter wheat planting in our area was from Sept 25-Oct 15 approx. The later it gets the less opportunity for tillering. You can plant wheat pretty shallow. If you could get to .75" consistently it would be great. In reality if you shoot for 1" hopefully you will be at .75" with the majority. Don't plant beyond about 1.5" deep.
Now for perhaps the most helpful advice. Bring in a crop scout that knows about wheat. If you hire them early, they can probably help with planting recommendations as well. If you don't konw what sort of populations and depth to plant, you have a very stiff learning curve coming next spring about wheat diseases which will hit about the same time you are probably planting corn and soybeans. If you are not willing to take the time to scout your own fields, and spend time learning about how to ID various diseases and threshold levels, etc. you will definately be $ ahead to hire a professional.
Just my $.02, hope it helps.
