| You've got the right mindset. You just have to do enough tons and get your overhead costs in line with the tons you have to do.
We do 4000+ tons/year with this rig. Ground 44 ton this morning.
Started grinding our own feed 20+ yrs ago with a $2500 Arts-Way 500A. Every grinder I've owned has been more expensive than the last but done enough more tons to offset the increased purchase price.
We've had a dedicated grinder tractor for a long time. The cost of the tractor is a relatively small $ amount compared to the grinder/mixer. It only gets unhooked if it needs to get worked on.
I know what our costs to operate it are and I know all of the hidden benefits that seldom get talked about, it makes $en$e for us. Honestly, if we didn't grind our own feed, I would probably exit the hog business. There are a lot of times that making the feed makes more $'s than the hogs themselves do.
