Colby, Kansas | Matt brings up some good points, in addition the amount of biomass out there really isn't as much as it seems. At Hays, KS (kind of on the line between central and western Kansas) it runs around 1500 lbs/ac. Here at Tribune were probably closer to a 1000 lb/ac. Even over 20 years, that's only 20,000 lbs/ac, not much when you put it in context with my prior post as using their estimates that would only gain you 0.1%. Work done some years ago in Eastern Colorado at the end of the first enrollment (1995) found that most fields had no change, I wouldn't doubt more significant changes east of here, but in the region where a lot of the CRP acres are its difficult to grow enough biomass in an unmanaged grass system (CRP) to make any difference. If the goal was to increase soil organic matter that could probably be done better with intensified dryland rotations.
