Wyoming

The show's storyline is set in this area of Wyoming and up into Montana, in the area that was known in the 20's/30's as Absaroka. The show calls it "Absaroka County," but there is no such county in Wyoming.  There was a state of Absaroka proposed back then, and every so often, you can run into posters, bumper stickers, etc from that era around here. They even had beauty pagents for a "Miss Absaroka."

The novels are written by Craig Johnson, who lives east of here by about 35 miles or so. He comes into town every so often to do book events. Nice guy. Likes to get his facts straight for his books.

In the summers around here, we have "Longmire Days" in Buffalo.

As scenic as this area is, the filming for the TV series is/was done in northern New Mexico, from Raton westward. Raton is just south of where I went to gunsmithing school (in Trinidad, CO, north of Raton on I-25) for a couple of years, so the first time I saw Longmire on the TV (after coming back), I turned to my wife and said "This story is supposed to be set in our backyard, but I know that scene we just watched was shot south of downtown Raton..."
