No, the only time it tries to lock up is when connected to the internet. Spreadsheets, etc have no problem.
Do you disconnect your computer from the internet when you are not specifically on the web? Today's operating systems are intended to be connected all the time. Updates auto install, and contrary to what many on this forum think it is a good thing. New features, SECURITY PATCHES, stability fixes, etc. If you do I'd encourage you to go look at my initial comment about updates. The problem you are describing indicates something is going on in the background and I've often found it is a failed update or patch. Identifying the culprit is sometimes challenging.
