Red or white, you can drill or broadcast anytime now you can get on it. Alsike is better for wet or acid soils as this brochure indicates:

A broadcast seeder for an ATV or UTV or other small tractor or is about $400 from Herd. I looked into that myself:

You could lightly drill the seed without too much disturbance with the drill you planted the wheat with.
