Missouri | My dad started my semen collection when I was just a kid and I'm lucky enough to have access to several other tanks of the old stuff. Unfortunately, the knowledge, and even the pictures, are disappearing with every funeral and you're often left sorting the rumors when dipping back into some of the stuff everyone else forgot about. I have a collection of breed magazines that predates the semen era, but many of those pictures and data points are still very tough to accept as real and can't replace the conversation with the people who actually used the bulls.
The whole epd deal is just punishing though and running genomics seems to help you on one bull and absolutely destroy the next. I ran a monster framed milking bull not too long ago and it came back as bottom of the breed for carcass weight, growth, and milk. Now he's stuck with those "proven" genomically enhanced epds that in no way fit him. Training population... blah , blah, blah. Sometimes you just have to laugh. Cattle get better every single year on nearly every single trait, just ask them. |
