Carlton, CO | I asked that question to my fertilizer/agronomy go to guy, he was thinking that one reason is along highway 50 a good percentage of the irrigated crops receive water from the Arkansas river and contain heavy salts. Tillage helps disperse the concentrated salt layers.
On the dry land crops, I tend to agree with the post above referring to the area farmers willingness to new school ideas. I have been using minimum to no-till for quite some time, and others in the area are slowly working that way. I have noticed that no-till conferences are typically North and East of here (Tribune and other Kansas locations), so I wonder if we have as much access to good information (except for NAT, of course). We do have some pretty hard core no-tillers in the area and they are always a great place for gaining advice. | |
