Subject: RE: "Cover Crop Considerations"

Lapel, In
The main benefit to using ryegrass is in the roots. It will root down much deeper than wheat. The deep roots are what is really important. Probably the biggest benefit in my mind besides creating channels for earthworms as well as food for the worm and channels for water percolation is building carbon deep in the soil. I don't think that can be emphasized enough. After thousands of years of native prairie grasses growing , mostly unharvested ,is the reason the prairie soils run so deep. It was not so much from glacial till. Cover crops ARE a move in the right direction. We simply need to learn how to manage them to the best benefit for our soil.
