| Auto industry would certainly push for ethanol over methanol due to corrosion issues and lower energy content that impacts fuel trims. The ether's will always carry the stigma that these components don't decompose well in water though most of the issues of underground storage tanks leaking have been addressed.
With that, ethanol has the highest octane blending value other then methanol on this list. Cars over the past 15 years or so can easily adapt to higher blends such as E20/E25 and the octane increase can often result in little to no mpg difference compared to regular grade E10.
From an emission standpoint, if one simply adds ethanol to gasoline or blends gasoline in line with market survey data, ethanol has a very positive benefit for lowering toxic and particulate emissions. | |
