Our 550 quad trac did that this spring, all of a sudden temp jumped up an alarm went off, waited to cool down an tried again. Temp alarm off again, first thought it might be the thermostat but top half of radiator was hot so figured it wasn't that an ended up being the water pump, impeller spun on the shaft. Maybe a possibility.
