I typically think of drought causing high nitrates. But it can also be high with excess nitrogen. I think cutting it just after a rain event can cause it to be high, as well., as the plant is translocating nutrients upward for rapid growth. I'd want to wait awhile after a big rain.

If you are concerned about high nitrates, swath it higher as the nitrates tend to accumulate in the base of the stalk. Or better yet, hand clip a few plants and send it off for a test before swathing it.

Crabgrass may cause more problems with volunteer the following year, etc. I don't know much about it. There was a guy at Noble Center pumping it for a number of years and he is now retired and still at the crabgrass. Might be a good option if you have sandy ground. It looks lush, but it is mostly water. (Looks like Tarzan, yields like Jane.)
