Subject: RE: Raising And Selling Hay Question

W Texas
Depends on the weather. Good weather and plenty of hay in the barns and buyers are picky.

In 2011 and 2012 they'd buy anything you could get in a bale. Remember selling one truck load of hay and the trucker called me and said when he got close to this old rancher's headquarters, he couldn't decide how to turn off the state highway and parked for a bit. Cows smelled the hay and charged over the fence and were eating the hay on the truck parked on the side of a state highway and causing a traffic jam. Old ranchers are never out of forage until they are out of money. Which is better than dairymen. Dairymen are never out of forage until the sheriff shows up to move them off the property (they'll order hay but won't pay.)

This year is starting out pretty rough and I'd bet it is going to be a seller's market by July.

After wheat, best bet is Sorghum/sudan or pearl millet. But I wouldn't plant unless you have some soil moisture and rain in forecast (or irrigation).
