I would start thinking in terms of G x E (genetics x environment). There are differences in root architecture. So different genetics will produce different types of roots. You throw in a relatively high population and you will likely not see long buttress type brace roots if you have a narrow, vertical type root genetic line or even a wide type for that matter.
With population, the stalk is not the only thing that is effected.
The season has been cool and moist so that only adds to the environmental element.
Roots are a funny thing and not as simple as one would think.
Next year could be different, but genetic differences will still show to some degree. Croplan Genetics has some discussion on this in their catalog. (I don't use their products but understand their concepts)
