Subject: Let's try it in a less emotional Industry

Ford builds a one ton pickup that gets 40 miles to the gallon with equal or improved overall towing performance and sells this truck for $72,000. All of this technology is patented. GM and Dodge purchase the rights on this technology for a $32,000 per truck royalty. Now Ford, GM and Dodge all still sell their standard technology trucks for appx $40,000 as well as the new technology trucks for appx $72,000.

a.) So are we mad at Ford for charging such a high price for their trucks? Should we get the government to 'steal' Ford's technology and give it to GM and Dodge?

b.) Now let's say GM only wants to pay Ford a royalty of $16,000 per truck and Ford says well then you can't have the technology. Should we get the government to 'steal' Ford's technology and give it to GM ?

Bottom line is if you want the savings and performance of Ford's technology then it's going to cost appx $72,000; if you don't want to pay that then there is still $40,000 trucks in the marketplace, granted there may be less but that is determined by the success of the new technology truck. It is also determined by the lack of a fourth major one ton truck manufacturer to supply the $40,000 truck market, if there is a demand. As well as the lack of GM, Dodge, Toyota or anyone else inventing the technology to compete with Ford's technology.
